Hunting

It was the fall of 1959 in November and I was working in a sporting goods store in Sioux Falls.  I was already out of high school and was very interested in bow hunting.  I bought many different bows, but my favorite was Fred Bear Archery.  I worked with two or three other people that wanted to go bow hunting.  At this time you had to buy a special archery license, that was only about four or five dollars.  We went to an area near Canton called Newton Hills.  It was by the Big Sioux River near the Iowa border.  We got to the area when it was still dark and the group split up.  I stayed at the end while the others pushed the deer towards me.  I was using a bow called a Codiac Magnum and it was one of the best at the time.  I don't know how long I was standing there, maybe an hour.  Out of nowhere, a doe ran out and looked right at me.  It was about 30 yards away.  I drew back and aimed for the shoulder.  I shot and didn't know if I hit it.  It ran for about 100 yards and dropped out of nowhere.  I found a trail of blood and knew I hit it, but the arrow wasn't anywhere in sight.  I figured out that it went all the way through the deer.

The next problem was figuring out if I could carry it or not.  So I tried to get it over my shoulder.  It weighed almost 150 pounds and I couldn't get it up.  I started to drag it towards the trail and yelled for my group.  A farmer on horseback came along and helped me drag the dear out of the woods.  We all made it back to the car at around the same time.  It was my first deer on my first shot.  We had it processed and it was the best meat I ever ate.
