Before this book Ralph had the mindset of the normal child not a care in the world because he didn't know what the real world was. He didn't know there were people in this world that wanted to exterminate other people. He knew there were people who did crimes but he didn't really grasp the concept of death until Simon was killed and his own life was at risk. He discovered something on that island, the real human capacity for evil.
