Through the book Ralph obsess over having a signal fire. Thinking its the only thing that can save them, the others don't agree though, thinking only of hunting and having fun. But in the end roles are switched as the ones who wanted fire become savages, and the savages create a fire big enough for a ship to see and that can engulf an entire island
