Myth  Journal  Interview

Wildlife populations need to be kept in balance with what their habitat can support and with what people want. In areas of our state where hunting and trapping access is limited or denied due to development, deer populations have soared, and their associated problems such as overfeeding, lyme disease, and vehicle accidents have also soared. In Aroostook County, while the habitat can support more moose, the people have reached their limit. A petition with over 2,000 names was presented to us to kill more moose during the hunting season in order to eliminate problems such as vehicle accidents. Without baiting, the bear population and its associated problems will increase. Please remember, that until the late fifties, there were bounties on bears, and a cash reward was offered for every dead bear.
