Death

Myth     Journal     Interview

In chapter IX, all three voices deal with death in some way. In the myth, the boys kill a snake which turns out to be their grandfather. Their grandmother dies a little later and the boys gave her a nice burial. In the second reading one of the twins disappears into the lake while the other became 10 portions of medicine. In the third story, Momaday explains how his father went to visit the shrine of a talyi-da-i. Each story varies a little bit, but they all deal with death and the honor and respect shown to one who has died.

Everyone has lost loved ones, that's just how life goes. When my great grandmother died, I felt a type of sadness that I never felt before. My grandma reassured me that my great grandmother wasn't in pain anymore, and I finally began to feel better. After 90 some years, one might be ready to go. That was the case with her. Just like the 3 accounts in the book where people remembered the stories, my great grandmother will also always be remembered.
