Tornados

In chapter 14 the Kiowas decided to make a horse out of clay. The Kiowas molded the clay until it formed into a horse, however the wind began to wear and tear at the clay horse until it was gone. The winds picked up and a storm grew with the birth of this clay horse. The wind speed increased and lighting began to strike at once. A tornado began to form and the Kiowas were afraid of it and didn't understand why it was blowing everything away. Once the Kiowas realized the horses tail was the tornado they began to understand it and yelled at the tornado to stop. After the tornado was gone the Kiowas began to understand the Man-ka-ih and told it to "Pass over me", and they were no longer afraid.

In South Dakota it seems like the weather changes all the time. Just recently Yankton was hit with a terrible storm full of high-speed winds and several tornados. The day after the storm, the newspaper had a picture of three tornados but I heard six or seven were spotted throughout the night. It was pretty shocking, especially when it was the first time I ever saw a tornado and knowing the damage they can cause, which they did that night, makes tornados even scarier.

In the book the Kiowas believe they are the reason why tornados occur because of the clay horse they created. The Kiowa boy had a cellar which protected him and in today's society many people rely on storm shelters, or storm cellars to protect themselves from tornados. I have never been in a situation of being in danger from a tornado but I did witness my first tornado this past summer.
