Myth

There is a myth from Cape Town, South America, that a man named Van Hunks beat the devil. Van Hunks use to be a Captain that sailed the seven seas. As he was getting older he was starting to spend more time sitting by a tree over looking the Table Bay. Everyday he would walk up to Table Mountain and sit down by the tree and take out his pipe and smoke. He loved this place because it was so peaceful up there. As he was going up to mountain one day he noticed that someone was sitting by his tree wearing all black with a large hat covering his face. As Van Hunks got closer the man called him by his first name. Astonished that the man knew who he was, he wanted to know who the man was, so he sat next to him and they started talking. Van Hunks was taking out his tobacco, and the man said that he could smoke more than him. Van Hunks challenged him to a contest. They took out a hunk of tobacco, put it in their pipes and started to smoke. After a while Van Hunks was starting to get sick, and so was the man. The whole mountain was covered with big clouds of smoke. The man leaned forward and his hat fell off and Van Hunks realized that the man was the devil! Van Hunks noticed that he had beaten the devil at a contest. The devil got mad and with a loud clap of thunder both of them disappeared. The legend says that when the southeastern winds blow and bring in clouds that cover the mountain, Van Hunks and the devil are smoking again.
