In the first section of The Way to Rainy Mountain in chapter six there are three stories told in different voices. The common theme between the three voices is the mentioning of spiders. The first one says the spider is the grandmother. Who is watching over the grandson after his mother dies. She tied a rope to finally catch him kind of like a spider’s web. The second one talks about how troops made the Kiowas leave their land and it began to rain. The Kiowas stayed on their horses. It started to flood and there were tarantulas all over. The third one he talks about seeing spiders in the desert and he is afraid of them. I relate best to the last story. I have always thought of spiders as being smart. They are sneaky and sly. They just freak me out. He talks about how they would move sideways away and creep off. I have seen plenty of spiders do this. He goes into detail about its size and how its hairy. I have always been terrified of spiders. I have had nightmares where I walk into a room and there are spiders everywhere. They don’t bother me at first but then they attack. I get caught in their web. I also think of huge spiders like on the third “Lord of the Rings” movies. Just the thought of their hairy creepy legs freak me out. They always seem to know something that we don't. They seem very clever and mischievous. |
