Living With Asthma

We all know that Piggy suffers from asthma; but what does that mean???

Asthma is a chronic condition that affects the airways. This condition cannot be cured; however it can be controlled by taking medicine through an inhaler. When one's asthma acts up the airways constrict, making it difficult to breath. The best way to think about this is to imagine breathing through a small straw.

    What causes an asthma attack?

Common causes for an asthma attack include: dust, mold, exercise, smoke, or cold water. Piggy tries to explain this to Ralph in the beginning of the book by saying, "My auntie told me not to run on account of my asthma." This tells us that Piggy's asthma attacks are often caused by him exerting himself too much.

What are the symptoms of asthma?

During an asthma attack, the person starts to cough or wheez. They experience a shortness of breath and their chest begins to tighten.
