Idomeneus was the leader of the Cretan troops during the Trojan War, and is famous for his heroism during battle. He was on his way home after Troy had fallen, and his ship was overwhelmed by a violent storm. Fearing for the lives of his crew, he begged upon Poseidon to calm the storm. He promised Poseidon that he would sacrifice the first living thing that greeted him when he returned home. The storm was calmed down, but when he returned home, the first person to greet him was his own son. Idomeneus knew he had to keep his promise to Poseidon, so he sacrificed his son. This sacrifice angered the other gods, so they drove him from Crete.
