Due at End of First Reading Day
Title of novel- Running Loose
Author- Chris Crutcher
What clues did you get about the novel from the cover design and the blurbs on the book jacket? That the book is about a guy who likes to play football
Write a detailed summary of the first 30 pages introducing the main character, setting, and plot.
Him and Carter practiced all summer to get to start first in football. His only REAL challenge that he wants is to be Boomer and show him up. The main character is Louie Banks from a small town called Trout who wants to be a football star. The mood of the story is so far really peaceful and sounds to good to be true.
Due At End of Second Reading Day
Write a page character analysis of an interesting character you have met so far. It doesn’t have to be the main character although it may be. What is the character like and how does the author reveal the characterization to you?
Boomers and interesting character. Him and Louie used to be good friends until he asked his Boomer's dad if his truck really did get swallowed up by a jelly roll, his father got angry and beat Boomer and him and Louie haven't been friends since.

Due At End of Fourth Reading Day
Choose any scene from the novel and take on the point of view of another character in the scene and rewrite the scene from that character’s point of view. Scene where Louis walks into Devils' Cafe and sees Washington over with his friends eating and having a good time. Here's Washington's point if view of what happened.
"I saw Louis Banks walk in to the Devil's Cafe one night. I remember the night because my team had played at home and won, so we decided to go get a bite. There was Louis Banks, the guy who tried to get him own team mate kicked off the field the night I bruised my ribs. I wasn't sure why he was there that night so I just shrugged it off and continued to eat with my friends. I guess he must have been there for a girl, because Sally Larson walked in and gave him a hug, and he went to eat with her and her friends. I kept telling myself to go over there and talk to him but never got the nerve to, finally, when I got the courage to go talk to him and thank him for what he tried to do, I turned around, and he was gone. I wish I could have gotten the courage to go over there sooner to talk to him before he walked out and drove away. That's something ill never let myself live down.
Due At End of Fifth Reading Day
By now you should have a good idea about the novel’s conflict. Explain the conflict giving enough details so I can get it. Then make a prediction about what you think will happen in the novel.
Louis and Becky were dating and it appeared the they were meant to be together and that they both liked there relationship. They spent day skiing and having fun on slopes around town, since Louis quit football and was extremely bored. They decided to go to a cabin for one night to have some "alone" time. The night after that Louis was talking with Carter and his mom pulled up and told him something bad happened. Becky had gotten into a horrible car accident and died..., he went insane and went and chopped down the huge tree near the hill that Becky and him had first kissed under when they first met.
Due at the End of the Sixth Reading Day
Choose any character you have encountered in the novel so far. Choose five objects that this character would put in his or her pocket, purse, bag, or suitcase. In other words, these are objects that help define the character. For example, if someone were to write about me, he would probably list a bottle of water as an object that helped define me and then would go on to explain that I was never without a bottle of water and that it was necessary for me to drink lots of water because of my kidney and so on…Whatever you choose explain why these objects are appropriate for the selected character. Then if the person were to carry a bag, what kind of bag would it be? Describe it and explain why.
Louie
1) Truck-He bought it from his Dad even though he could use it whenever he wanted
2) Track Shoes-Near the end when he started running, he loved it and it got his mind off Becky
3) Skiis-He found his grandpas ski's and loved it a lot.
4) A Knife-To defend himself against Boomer and his insane mind.
5) Friendship Bracelet-He was loyal to his friend Carter and he showed it throughout the book.
Due at the End of the Seventh Reading Day
Write a quick book review following the 5 W format. As you work through your response you can label each paragraph with the journalist’s question that it explores.
Paragraph 1: WHO is the main character of the novel? How does the character change over the course of the story? How would you describe this character’s personality?
Louie Banks is the main character of this novel. He learns about death and how to get to get in touch with his feelings even though he's a huge football player.
Paragraph 2: WHAT is the novel about?
Its about a football player that learns how to love a girl, when the girl gets into a car accident and dies he goes insane for a couple days and falls into Track.
Paragraph 3: WHERE does the story take place? What is the setting(s) and how does it add to the novel. How does the location relate to the characters and theme? What time period or era? How can you tell? If the novel involves more than one setting, choose the most important one and explain why.
The story takes place in a small town called trout. It's a very peaceful neighborhood, not many people live in trout, so there's a lot of plant life and animal life. It gives the novel a kind of peacefulness about it. I would say this story happens in the late 70's or maybe early 80's. The way they talk and there activities in the town give it that feel.
Paragraph 4: WHEN does the climax of the novel occur? Tell me about it.
The climax of this story occurs after Becky, Louie's girlfriends that he love a lot, dies. When Becky dies, Louie, I think, goes into huge denial and depression and even insanity, he cuts down a tree from rage and needs to try and forget about it, but he cant.
Paragraph 5: WHY did the author write this story? What point is the author trying to make? Link your why response to a theme.
The author probably wrote this story to tell readers what's its like when close ones die and what kind of things to expect, he wanted to tell about love and how it effects everyone and even though these things happen we need to stay sane and try and get through it.
Paragraph 6: Rate this novel on a 1-10 scale with 1 being low and 10 being high. Then explain why. Make a recommendation about the novel one way or another.
i give this book a 9, The book was extremely good and went into detail about life and how things are, but some parts were kind of to good to be true and just didnt make a lot of sense.
