Many years ago at the falls in the Spokane River, the Coyote dog would always catch fish. It was always a good spot to catch fish there because they could never make it over the falls, leaving the Coyote an easy catch. The Indians always camped at Peaceful Valley and caught salmon as well. The Spokane River runs from Couer d' Alene Lake. One day Coyote went to Couer d' Alene and found a very attractive woman there. He wanted to marry this woman. She said, "I think I want to marry you." Coyote said, "If indeed you will, I will go and dig around the falls so that the salmon can make their way up the river to Coeur d' Alene." The women's folks were very happy with the fact that the salmon would be coming up the river. After Coyote was done digging he went back and asked the maiden if she really wanted to marry him. She told him, "No, I don't want you." Coyote decided to go back and not dig anymore. He never finished digging and no salmon ever made it up the river.
