Title of novel- Running Loose
Author- Chris Crutcher
What clues did you get about the novel from the cover design and the blurbs on the book jacket?- That it has to do with a football player and his high school career.
Write a detailed summary of the first 30 pages introducing the main character, setting, and plot.- That the main character is a high school football player named Louis Fredrick Banks. He was born in 1964. Him and his friend trained every day in the off season. His best friends name is Carter. He also has a high school nemesis named Boomer. At his job he has a boss named Dakota who gives him advise about football. He thinks he will start if he doesn't make any mistakes but Dakota tells him different. Then they have a pep rally with the coach about going undefeated and wining the state title again. Then Louis thinks he's going to get second behind Carter and beat Boomer but Louis gets third place in the mile run.
Due At End of Second Reading Day
Write a page character analysis of an interesting character you have met so far. It doesn’t have to be the main character although it may be. What is the character like and how does the author reveal the characterization to you?- Louis is a boy who is in high school and wants to have a career in football. he has a best friend named carter.
Due at end of Third Reading Day
Choose two significant quotations from what you have read so far. Write the quote below along with the page number and explain in a well-developed paragraph the importance of the quotation.
Quote 1-"kill that jungle bunny" said boomer
Explanatory paragraph- the coach was yelling at them to go play dirty football at practice and boomer got excited.
Quote 2-"if we play him to hurt him that he'll think he's better that us, and I don't want him to think that" said boomer.
Explanatory paragraph- some teammates think that boomers getting lazy and then he makes that comment.
Due At End of Fifth Reading Day
By now you should have a good idea about the novel’s conflict. Explain the conflict giving enough details so I can get it. Then make a prediction about what you think will happen in the novel.-the conflict as of now is that Becky just died and that the funeral is just about to happen. The main conflict of the book so far is that their is not alot of good happening. Their is alot of sadness going around. Also by the end of the book Louis will get to play football. but louis and the town will always remember Becky.
Due at the End of the Sixth Reading Day
Choose any character you have encountered in the novel so far. Choose five objects that this character would put in his or her pocket, purse, bag, or suitcase. In other words, these are objects that help define the character. For example, if someone were to write about me, he would probably list a bottle of water as an object that helped define me and then would go on to explain that I was never without a bottle of water and that it was necessary for me to drink lots of water because of my kidney and so on…Whatever you choose explain why these objects are appropriate for the selected character. Then if the person were to carry a bag, what kind of bag would it be? Describe it and explain why.- I think carter would carry a picture of Becky, a football, keys, money, and a pair of football cleats. Carter would have a duffle bag because he plays sports and he has to carry all his football stuff.
Due at the End of the Seventh Reading Day
Write a quick book review following the 5 W format. As you work through your response you can label each paragraph with the journalist’s question that it explores.
Paragraph 1: WHO is the main character of the novel? How does the character change over the course of the story? How would you describe this character’s personality?
The main character name is Louis. He learns that through life certain things happen and that he cannot help what happens. I believe that Louis personality throughout the novel is fairly negative because he doesn't believe he can do anything successful in life.
Paragraph 2: WHAT is the novel about?
Running Loose deals with serious problems—parent/child relationships, dating, sex, racism and death.
Paragraph 3: WHERE does the story take place? What is the setting(s) and how does it add to the novel. How does the location relate to the characters and theme? What time period or era? How can you tell? If the novel involves more than one setting, choose the most important one and explain why.
The story is set in a small town in Idaho called Trout. The setting of the book is et during the late 60's and the end of the 80's. The location of this book relates well with it because how everyone knows everyone. Also how they can only play 8 man football, because there to small of a town.
Paragraph 4: WHEN does the climax of the novel occur? Tell me about it.
To me the climax of the novel was when Becky died. I thought this because after that happens really nothing that important happened. Becky died by a car accident when she was driving and went of the bridge.
Paragraph 5: WHY did the author write this story? What point is the author trying to make? Link your why response to a theme.
I think that the author wrote this book because maybe that's were he grew up in some type of town like that were it was so small and every one new everyone. And that maybe someone close to him died and the whole town grieved like they did in this book.
Paragraph 6: Rate this novel on a 1-10 scale with 1 being low and 10 being high. Then explain why. Make a recommendation about the novel one way or another.
I would rate this novel as a 8 because i thought that it was a good book but. But I am more of a person that likes to read stuff with alot of action in it. I would suggest having more action like more football games.
