| Growing up, I lived on a big farm out in the middle of Nebraska. I had about eleven brothers and sisters. My parents had to drive into town to take one of my sick younger brothers to the doctor. I was the one of the older boys, so I was pretty much in charge when the left. You could tell by the cattle that there was going to be a storm. My dad always told me that when they were bunched up in a group it meant a storm was coming. A little while after they left, it started to get really dark north of our big barn. It was around dinner time so everyone was around the house. The wind started blowing incredibly hard. I got all my siblings to go in side, down to the basement. I was trying to be brave and stood up stairs to watch the storm. I remember seeing trees just snap because of the wind. About that time I saw a funnel cloud drop right behind our barn. The roof of the barn started to fly off and pieces of it flew at the house. Right when I stepped away from the window, it shattered from pieces from the barn. After a few minutes in the basement the storm finally stopped. Later after my parents returned home, we all had to go outside and start fixing the damage. |
