Myth    Interview    Journal

In the myth “How Antelope Carrier Saved the Thunderbirds and Became the Chief of the Winged Creatures” the main character is a young boy who has four arrows of different colors and a bow, which were given to him by the Wood Rats because his family was too poor to buy him a bow and arrows. Every time the young boy went hunting he brought back with him as many antelope as his family needed. One day the boy was carried away by two Thunderbirds and when he awoke the thunderbirds asked him if he would kill the two-headed water serpent that always killed the baby thunderbirds. The young boy sat and guarded the baby thunderbirds and when the two-headed serpent came up to eat them the young boy shot two of his magic arrows into each of its mouths and killed the serpent. The thunderbirds were so happy that the boy saved their children that they gave him their magic of having lightning in his breath and in his eyes.
