In Greek mythology there is a great hunter named Orion. Orion has two hunting dogs and their names are Canis Major and Canis Minor. Canis Major is a huge constellation in the sky. Sirius is the brightest star in the sky. Story goes that Sirius is the diamond in Canis Majors collar. Sirius means Scorching or Sparkling star because it is closest to the sun in the summer. Canis Major is supposed to be crouching and ready to kill the rabbit named Lepus. The star dog is dead because of drought and disease. Now days Sirius is in the winter and he accompanies Orion across the skies. The Egyptians give the credit to the star dog for the flood of the Nile River every year. Orion is the symbol of Osiris, the god of resurrection. Sirius is the symbol of Isis, the god of fertility. The story goes that Isis cried over the death of her husband Osiris, and with her tears melted the snow on the mountains which made the snow melt causing the flooding of the Nile River.
