Fire

Myth    Interview    Journal

Long ago animals and trees walked and talked together, before there was fire. The clever fox decided that he would create fire for the world. The fox decided to ask the Geese for help. The fox asked the geese to teach him their cry. The geese agreed as long as the fox would fly with them. So the fox agreed. The geese found a way to attach wings the fox but warned him that while in flight he has to have his eyes closed. One night during flight the geese and the fox passed over a village of fireflies and the glare of sparkling lights caused the fox to forget and he opened his eyes. Instantaneously the fox opened his eyes and his wings collapsed and he fell. The fox landed within the walls of the firefly village and asked them how he was to get out. They told him that there was an oak tree that if he asked it, it would bend down and catapult him over the wall.  Later that evening the fox found the water hole of the fireflies and found earth that when mixed with water made paint. The fox colored himself white and persuaded the fireflies to have a festival with dancing and music provided by him. They agreed and made a fire to dance around. The fox made a drum and tied a stick to his tail for to beat the drum. As the fox was drumming he moved closer and closer to the fire. The fox complained of fatigue and let the fireflies take over the drumming while he secretly put the stick in the fire to ignite it. Once the stick was aflame he took off to the oak tree and demanded to bend over and catapult him out of the village. The tree did so and so the fox ran with the fireflies right behind him. As the fox ran the ignited stick was catching his path on fire. The fox finally became so tired he could not go on, so he gave the stick to the hawk, which carried it away. As the hawk flew it spread fire sparks everywhere, which started fire on earth. The fireflies caught the fox and his punishment for stealing fire was that he could never make use of it for himself.
