Title of novel: Running Loose
Author: Chris Crutcher
What clues did you get about the novel from the cover design and the blurbs on the book jacket?: This book is about a person who likes to play football.
Write a detailed summary of the first 30 pages introducing the main character, setting, and plot.
Louie starts out buy talking about what has happened to him like he lost his girlfriend and trying out for the football team. He has been through a lot it things moving 5 years ago didn't help. His family had to move because his dad got into some trouble with welfare. When he is in high school he tries out for the football team.
Due At End of Second Reading Day
Write a page character analysis of an interesting character you have met so far. It doesn’t have to be the main character although it may be. What is the character like and how does the author reveal the characterization to you?
Louie likes to talk about what he thinks about everything that is going on in his life. He talks to his parents about what is going on in school, about what is going on with his girlfriend, (though he really never had one until now) and what is going on in all his life. Louis doesn't like to do anything wrong. He is what you say to be a goody goody but then there is a side to him that can be un predicting.
Due at end of Third Reading Day
Choose two significant quotations from what you have read so far. Write the quote below along with the page number and explain in a well-developed paragraph the importance of the quotation.
Quote 1 "From now on, I'm a lover" Louis said
Page: 72
Explanatory paragraph
I think this quote is significant because he is choosing to be a good person and have good values in his life. If everyone was like this the world would be a whole different place. But not everybody will change because there are very greedy people out there in this world and wont change just because they don't want to. Just one person that has a positive look out on life can change the world if they really want to.
Quote 2 " The thing I hate about life, so far, is tat nothing's ever clear. Every time you get things all figured out, somebody throws in another kink."
Page: 85
Explanatory paragraph
I think this quote is significant because it is true to everyday life. When you think that life is turning out right something happens that turns the whole thing around.
Due At End of Fourth Reading Day
Choose any scene from the novel and take on the point of view of another character in the scene and rewrite the scene from that character’s point of view.
As soon as I walked through those doors of the Seven Devils' Cafe I saw my old friend Louis Banks from Trout. As soon as I saw him all those memories of what used to be came back to me. See Louie had a crush on me in the 3rd grade and every week of the school year I beat him up. But then in Junior high we became the best of friends. But then when I moved away to Salmon because the girls sports program was not the greatest I didn't get to see him as often. So when I saw him I went to him and gave him a great big hug and was thinking about the good old times.
Due At End of Fifth Reading Day
By now you should have a good idea about the novel’s conflict. Explain the conflict giving enough details so I can get it. Then make a prediction about what you think will happen in the novel.
The conflict in this novel is about Louie trying to find his true self. He has issues about what he should do with just about everything. He always goes to his parents for advise
Due at the End of the Sixth Reading Day
Choose any character you have encountered in the novel so far. Choose five objects that this character would put in his or her pocket, purse, bag, or suitcase. In other words, these are objects that help define the character. For example, if someone were to write about me, he would probably list a bottle of water as an object that helped define me and then would go on to explain that I was never without a bottle of water and that it was necessary for me to drink lots of water because of my kidney and so on…Whatever you choose explain why these objects are appropriate for the selected character. Then if the person were to carry a bag, what kind of bag would it be? Describe it and explain why.
Due at the End of the Seventh Reading Day
Write a quick book review following the 5 W format. As you work through your response you can label each paragraph with the journalist’s question that it explores.
Paragraph 1: WHO is the main character of the novel? How does the character change over the course of the story? How would you describe this character’s personality?
The main character of this story is Louie Banks. At first he is shy and keeps to himself and doesn't speak up for himself. In the middle he finally starts to stick up for him self because of his girlfriend Becky. I would describe this characters personality to be very content.
Paragraph 2: WHAT is the novel about?
Paragraph 3: WHERE does the story take place? What is the setting(s) and how does it add to the novel. How does the location relate to the characters and theme? What time period or era? How can you tell? If the novel involves more than one setting, choose the most important one and explain why.
Paragraph 4: WHEN does the climax of the novel occur? Tell me about it.
When Louis found out that Becky died. Louie and Carter noticed a ambulance driving by with the sirens on they just thought that that they were just going to get some lunch. But it turns out different Becky dies in a car crash she want over the bridge and into the river because some 13 year old was goofing around on a motorcycle and she had to swerve to miss them. After Louie found out he went into a deep depression and didn't wanted to be bother by anybody. It was best for him at the moment.

ragraph 5: WHY did the author write this story? What point is the author trying to make? Link your why response to a theme.I think the author wrote this story to let young people know that it is not the end of the world if something goes on and if you get involved in something it is more likely for you to get over it sooner.
Paragraph 6: Rate this novel on a 1-10 scale with 1 being low and 10 being high. Then explain why. Make a recommendation about the novel one way or another.
I would give this book a full 10 because it is one of those books that make you laugh and cry all at the same moment
