Title of novel

Running Loose

Author

Chris Crutcher

Day One

What clues did you get about the novel from the cover design and the blurbs on the book jacket?

It's about football.

Write a detailed summary of the first 30 pages introducing the main character, setting, and plot.

Basically the main character is telling us (the reader) about his life and friends. He's afraid of Boomer and he works out with Carter. These are all members of the football team. He has a girlfriend named Becky, she is someone who pretty much can get anyone she wants and so she chooses the main character who is kind of a nerd. The first few paragraphs in the book tell about him screwing his year up, I guess we'll learn about that later on.

Day Two

Write a page character analysis of an interesting character you have met so far. It doesn’t have to be the main character although it may be. What is the character like and how does the author reveal the characterization to you?

My favorite character is Becky. I am so unbelievably jealous of Becky. She is just so popular and Pretty. She gets all the guys in school. I totally wish I could do that. she also seems really nice and down to earth. she has book smarts and common sense. She doesn't go for the popular guy, she goes for the one that would make more sense.

Due at end of Third Reading Day

Choose two significant quotations from what you have read so far. Write the quote below along with the page number and explain in a well-developed paragraph the importance of the quotation.

Quote 1

"On the way home I remember thinking there much be some safe way to tell that dumb bastard that it isn't "silver" rights."

Explanatory paragraph

This Quote made me laugh. he was about to get the poop beaten out of him and all he could think of on the way home was that. What a tough dude. I wonder really what would be a safe way to tell that to an air headed piece of meat.

Quote 2

"It's up to you," Carter said. "I just hate to see you throw it all away. It's just that it kills me to set my sights on something and then not get it."

Explanatory paragraph

The part where he talks about throwing things away is pretty much life. I've experienced it plenty of times so I know what he's talking about and where he's coming from. It can be a hurtful thing when things don't go your way but that's what life is about.

Due At End of Fourth Reading Day

Choose any scene from the novel and take on the point of view of another character in the scene and rewrite the scene from that character’s point of view.

page 91

Coach Lednecky's point of view.

After giving Louie my long speech about football and how grateful he should be to be included in it, I gave him my offer to start out as third string. It didn't seem fair to put him where he was before when everyone else at least follows orders. or course he refused. By then I was bouncing off the walls with anger, I just walked out. Jasper called me back in and of course asked Louie to give me an apology. Instead he gave me nothing but insults say insane things like to apologize to Washington and to apologize to my own foot ball team. That just blew my mind!

"That's enough!" Jasper yelled, "Are you calling coach Lednecky a liar?"

"I'm not calling coach Lednecky anything," Louie said, "I'm saying what he's telling you about the game on Friday isn't true."

I wanted to pop that kid so bad. He almost blew my cover. Even though I lied just a little bit doesn't mean I lied a lot.

Due At End of Fifth Reading Day

By now you should have a good idea about the novel’s conflict. Explain the conflict giving enough details so I can get it. Then make a prediction about what you think will happen in the novel.

So, Louie ends up with a perfect life in the beginning of the novel. slowly Louie's life ends up going down hill to the extreme. he had to quit the football team, everyone hates him for quitting, and his girl friend, Becky, died. you'd think you wouldn't be able to come back from that, but eventually he gets the chance to join the track team and he actually gets to pick himself back up. my prediction is that one day he will become president of the US of A. But some random dream of Becky will pop up and he will severely harm himself in his sleep but accidently jumping off a balcony.

Due at the End of the Sixth Reading Day

Choose any character you have encountered in the novel so far. Choose five objects that this character would put in his or her pocket, purse, bag, or suitcase. In other words, these are objects that help define the character. For example, if someone were to write about me, he would probably list a bottle of water as an object that helped define me and then would go on to explain that I was never without a bottle of water and that it was necessary for me to drink lots of water because of my kidney and so on…Whatever you choose explain why these objects are appropriate for the selected character. Then if the person were to carry a bag, what kind of bag would it be? Describe it and explain why

I choose Becky. In her purse she would probably have a condom because the whole escapade with Louie. I would choose a family picture because when Becky told her father about her and Louie having sex, it was obvious that she is close enough with him to tell him that. Because Becky is a cheerleader, I would then choose a bow (for her hair) and maybe some makeup. Keys to the Cabin so when she wants to her and Louie adventure there when they want to. Then there would be some quarters to call Louie to meet her some place randomly.

I chose the purse because I'm pretty sure Becky is a girl. Now the color I would not know or what type.

WHO is the main character of the novel? How does the character change over the course of the story? How would you describe this character’s personality?

The Main Character is Louie Banks. Louie Changed from a person trying to fit in to someone just trying to live his life. Louie is more of a Laid back kind of guy. He's pretty honest and speaks his mind.

WHAT is the novel about?

The novel is about a boy named Louie who is attempting to fit in by making it big on the football team. Eventually he discovers the coach is a cheating son-of-a-gun, so he quits. Normally this wouldn't be that big of a deal, but on an 8-man team this is since there are not many players to begin with. Within this mess he finds a girlfriend named Becky who teaches him about life and how to deal. One day when Louie was at work Becky dies and he is at an all time low. Eventually he comes back in the end by joining the track team and beating the person he was sticking up for.

WHERE does the story take place? What is the setting(s) and how does it add to the novel. How does the location relate to the characters and theme? What time period or era? How can you tell? If the novel involves more than one setting, choose the most important one and explain why.

The story takes place in Trout, Idaho. The country, small town setting makes this story possible for some of the events such as cross country skiing to random cabins, going out to the middle of nowhere, teen drinking. In my opinion I would think that the time period would possibly be present day since there are some common items, but you can't really tell since it's a small town and they might not have availability to resources we do. The most important setting would probably be at school since that's where most of the drama started.

WHEN does the climax of the novel occur? Tell me about it.

I think the climax is when Becky dies. That's probably the last serious problem that occurs in the novel, and that's when his life is at the lowest it can get.

WHY did the author write this story? What point is the author trying to make? Link your why response to a theme.

The author wrote the story because he's trying to tell a story about a kid who stood up for his beliefs, got shot down, emotions running low, and then made a recovery thanks to some teachers and friends. The author I think is trying to say to  stand up for what is right and even if you get shot down it is still possible to come back. The standing up for rights mixes in with Louie and his tragic events.

Rate this novel on a 1-10 scale with 1 being low and 10 being high. Then explain why. Make a recommendation about the novel one way or another.

I rate this novel a 9. It really did relate to me since it dealt with a lot of teen issues. I recommend this book to most teens who are looking for a drama that relates to them.

MOVIE REVIEW

Ferris Bueller’s day off is an fascinating adventure of a popular high school student, Ferris Bueller and his best friend and girlfriend take to down town Chicago. The only obstacle in their way is not getting caught for playing hooky, which is very hard since the principal is very suspicious and decides to do a little investigating himself. This movie is interesting and hilarious. At a kid’s point of view it was amazing. I give this movie FIVE OUT OF FIVE STARS. The costumes are hilarious considering the fact that this movie was made in the 1980’s. The acting was wonderful. Everything was realistic. Hats off to you Ferris Bueller’s day off, hats off to you!
