Crop Circles

Back

A crop circle is defined as an organized harmonic form that manifests around the world. Some people believe that crop circles are formed by alien involvement. Although some research supports this idea, I do not believe that crop circles are formed in this particular way. In order to support my beliefs, I will share some brief history and give supporting details that show that aliens did not form crop circles.

The first recorded crop circles appeared in 1965 in Queensland, Australia. The first "crop circles" appeared as flattened circles in just about any type of agricultural material, therefore receiving their name. The study of crop circles became known as "cereology." In 1972, crop circles became known in England and just three years later, they were discovered in Switzerland. By the year 1997, crop circles had been reported in over twenty-four countries worldwide and are still appearing in more today. (Lewis, James R.) Crop circles have been found in mediums such as wheat, rye, barley, canola, linseed, and even ice. Finally, the first article to publicize the crop circle issues appeared in the year 1980. Even though this was when it was first printed, people worldwide knew about the discoveries in about every warm climate possible. In the beginning, crop circles were simple circles but developed into circles inside circles and eventually came to be formed into any given shape imaginable. (Lewis, James R.)

When crop circles were first brought into publicity, crop formations were first thought to be connected to life elsewhere along with the UFO’s, but the information that has been had on aliens and the information that has been had about human-creating crop circles does not necessarily equal out. According to information that author James R. Lewis gathered, some people blame the crop circles on UFO involvement because they do not know what or who else to put the finger at. Lewis also gathered that most people will probably keep blaming aliens until the facts are set in stone. Ideas have been shaped according to a popular worldview. For example, UFO fanatics believe only what they have been exposed to and are very closed minded when it comes to other opinions. These individuals claim stories of having experiences with spacecrafts. In contrast, Christians believe that the devil is the only one involved with the circles. Under this topic, people have testified to seeing the devil. Ministers and other very involved peoples of the church have a strong belief that crop circles are associated with the devil. To try to reverse these evil doings, these peoples counteract them with prayer, holy water, and sometimes even exorcism. (Lewis, James R.)

Over time, crop circles have been abandoned somewhat but have come up in discussions over the years. The majority of the times that the topic has come up have been in discussions over conspiracy theories and extra-terrestrial life and UFO’s and such. However, over time, the specialists over the topic believe that rather than being a result of alien involvement; the crop circles carry a message of humanity in a way. For example, there are a collection of people that believe that crop circles are signs from mother earth, who is believed to be a goddess. The theory continues stating that mother earth suffered beyond her limits and that pollution and the exploitation of natural resources must cease because of men destroying all of her natural beauty. (Lewis, James R.)
After some time of people knowing the facts and various theories of crop circles, two men came forward claiming that they know of the circles and that they had been creating them for at least fifteen years. The two admitted to using simple household and yard items such as ropes and pieces of wood. The two were said to have come forward so that anyone and everyone knew, that no matter who had made crop circles, or who will make them in the future, that they were the first. (Silva, Freddy). This example has made a great number of alien fanatics rethink their beliefs.

As stated above, creators of crop circles have used common items rather than complex tools. Over time, however, the people that have studied or sat down to think about how to create the famous crop circles have come up with new and improved ways to create the crop circles or at least use them to their advantage. In the last decade, people have used high-tech surveying equipment to create these famous circles and shapes in the crops of Mother Nature. Also, now that the technology has improved over time, the once called, "circles", have now become more complex and have been recorded as about any shape.

Other stories have come up as well over the years. In 1978, a story appeared that a farmer invoked the devil to mow his crops but found that the evil one had created circles in his field. (Lewis, James R.) The circle that was involved with this story was indeed intact, but how it was made is not agreed with by many people.

A paranormal researcher, David Percy, believes that a certain area of the world is affected. This area dates back to the sixteenth century of certain unsolved mysteries, such as 5,000 year old structures in England which include enormous circular mounds as well as numerous others. This area is proved to have the largest concentration of crop circles and other paranormal ideas in the world. (Lewis, James R. & Percy, David)

Even though some stories may not exactly be proved as neither alien nor human made, they have been connected to humans. A woman came forward some time after dream research first became popular. The woman claimed to have had a dream consisting of three circles connected in a triangular pattern. The figure that was described was found and recorded in a near by field just days later. (Lewis, James R.)

With so many recordings of crop circles, the circles obviously had to appear somewhere. In 1990, while some farm owners complained to the government about loss of profit and inability to feed their families, others simply fenced off their fields and sold tickets for the public to view, or even meditate on, the unusual phenomena. While the complainers receive compensation from the government to replace their money loss, the fencers simply obtained their own alternative form of income. Months later, some came forward to say that they deliberately formed crop circles on their own as means of making an extra income. (Grose, Thomas K.)

In conclusion, no matter how much evidence exists supporting the idea that crop circles are formed by aliens, there is also a great amount supporting my cause as well. Based on my research, I believe that there would not be enough research in the world to make me change my belief, crop circles are not formed by aliens.
