Dog Legend

The constellation Procyon, or Dog, is named for a dog given by Zeus as a guardian for Europa, and later came to Minos. When Minos was ill, Prokris, the wife of Kephalos, cured him. She received the dog as a reward for her services, because she was so fond of hunting and the dog was so swift that no beast could escape him. After the death of Prokris, the dog was handed on to her husband, Kephalos. He brought it with him to Thebes. There was a fox there, which was said to be so swift that it could outrun any dog. When the two animals met, Zeus, in a dilemma, changed them both to stone.
